Rainforest Alliance Certification For RFG’s Pineapple Products

RFG’s canned pineapple products manufactured at its Eswatini operation have received the Rainforest Alliance certification, recognising the rigorous environmental, social and economic sustainability standards applied in the farming operations.

This is the first of RFG’s products to receive this global certification.

All RFG’s canned pineapple products will soon feature the little green tree frog symbol of the Rainforest Alliance which certifies that the product was produced using sustainable agricultural practices.

In nature, frogs are bioindicators and their presence is a positive sign that the natural ecosystem is balanced and thriving, so a healthy population of frogs indicates a healthy environment.

The Rainforest Alliance is an international organisation active in over 70 countries which works across business, agriculture and forests to address the sustainability of farms and forests, human rights and climate change. Environmental and social sustainability standards applied by the Rainforest Alliance are evaluated by independent third-party auditors.

RFG’s pineapple farms in Eswatini total over 1 400 hectares and produce a combined harvest of 42 000 tons of pineapple each season.

RFG’s CEO Pieter Hanekom said the Rainforest Alliance certification confirms the group’s sustainable farming practices which address issues including soil preparation, plant health management and harvesting and ensures that no hazardous pesticides are used on the farms.

“Globally there is a growing consumer awareness of ethical and sustainable products and packaging. The Rainforest Alliance seal enables consumers to recognise and choose products that contribute towards a better future for people and planet, which also promotes the brand’s credibility,” he said.
